Beyond the Ice: Why Goalie Coaching, Mentorship & Mental Performance Matter
By Coach Chris Cobb | Top Prospects Goaltending USA

Introducing the TPG USA x Goalie Mentors Partnership
I'm excited to announce that Top Prospects Goaltending USA (TPG USA) has officially partnered with Goalie Mentors (Future Pro USA) to give goaltenders more opportunities for coaching, mentorship, and development beyond regular on-ice training.
Throughout my coaching career, my goal has always been to give goaltenders the resources, guidance, and support they need to reach their full potential, both on and off the ice.
This partnership is another step toward that mission.
By bringing together experienced goalie coaches, mental performance resources, guest experts, and an online community dedicated to goaltending, we're creating more opportunities for goalies to learn and develop, regardless of where they're located.
But why is this so important?
Because becoming a better goaltender involves much more than what happens during a lesson, practice, or game.

Great Goaltenders Are Developed Beyond the Ice
After years of coaching goaltenders at the youth, college, and professional levels, there's something I've learned:
The goalies who reach the next level aren't necessarily the ones who spend the most time on the ice. They're the ones who consistently look for opportunities to learn, improve, and develop every aspect of their game.
On-ice training is essential. Developing proper technique, improving movement efficiency, understanding positioning, and learning to read the game are all critical components of becoming a successful goaltender.
However, on-ice training is only one part of the development process.
As coaches, we have limited time with each goalie during lessons and practices.
What happens between those sessions matters, too.
Goalies who take time to understand the position, ask questions, study the game, and develop their mental skills are investing in their long-term development.
That's one of the biggest reasons I'm excited about our new online goalie development community.
Your development shouldn't stop when you leave the ice.
The Mental Side of Goaltending: What Separates Good Goalies From Great Goalies?
Physical ability can only take a goaltender so far.
I've worked with incredibly talented goalies who struggle with confidence, overthink their performance, or have difficulty bouncing back after allowing a bad goal or getting pulled from a game.
I've also worked with goalies who might not be the most naturally gifted athletes but consistently find ways to perform because they've developed the mental skills needed to succeed.
The difference? Their mindset.
Goaltending is one of the most mentally demanding positions in sports.
Unlike many other positions, a goaltender's mistakes are often immediately visible on the scoreboard.
A single goal can change the momentum of a game, and how a goalie responds can be just as important as the save they make next.
Common Mental Challenges Goalies Face
Nearly every goaltender experiences challenges such as:
Bouncing back after a bad goal: Learning how to move past mistakes without allowing them to affect the next save.
Responding after getting pulled: Maintaining confidence and preparing to return stronger in the next game.
Managing performance pressure: Understanding that perfection isn't realistic and learning to compete without the fear of making mistakes.
Avoiding overthinking: Trusting their training, preparation, and instincts rather than trying to control every movement.
Maintaining consistency: Developing routines and mental habits that support performance throughout a long season.
These challenges are a normal part of goalie development.
And while technical training is incredibly important, developing the mental side of the game is just as essential.
The goal isn't to eliminate mistakes. Every goalie makes them.
The goal is to develop the confidence, resilience, and mindset to respond to those mistakes.
How TPG USA and Goalie Mentors Are Helping Goalies Develop
Our partnership with Goalie Mentors (Future Pro USA) creates an opportunity for goalies to continue their development through an online coaching and mentorship community.
The program focuses on three important areas.
1. Expert Goalie Coaching & Mentorship
Having access to experienced coaches can make a significant difference in a goalie's development.
Through the Goalie Mentors community, goaltenders can learn from coaches with experience winning national championships as both players and coaches.
Members can benefit from virtual coaching opportunities, mentorship, and guidance designed to help them better understand the position.
This additional support complements regular on-ice training by providing opportunities to continue learning between practices and lessons.
Whether a goalie is trying to make a higher-level team, earn a starting position, or pursue college hockey, access to experienced mentors can help them navigate their development.
2. Mental Performance & Confidence Building
One of the most valuable parts of this community is its emphasis on mental performance.
Goalies need more than physical skills to perform consistently.
They need to develop the ability to handle pressure, maintain focus, overcome adversity, and trust themselves in challenging situations.
Mental performance resources can help goalies:
Build confidence in their abilities.
Develop strategies for responding to mistakes.
Improve focus and preparation.
Manage pressure and expectations.
Establish routines that support consistent performance.
Great goaltending isn't just about making saves. It's about having the confidence to make the next one.
3. Exclusive Training Resources & Guest Experts
Development is an ongoing process, and there's always something new to learn.
Through the online community, goalies can access educational resources, coaching insights, guest experts, and opportunities to connect with others who share their passion for the position.
These resources can help goalies expand their knowledge of the game and continue learning throughout the season.
It's also an opportunity for families to gain additional insight into the challenges and demands of goaltending.
Who Is the Online Goalie Development Community For?
One of the things I appreciate most about this partnership is that it provides opportunities for goaltenders at different stages of their development.
Whether you're:
A young goalie learning the fundamentals of the position.
A developing goalie working toward becoming a starter.
A competitive youth or junior goalie trying to reach the next level.
An aspiring college goaltender.
A goalie looking to improve confidence and mental performance.
Having access to the right coaching, mentorship, and resources can support your development.
And because the community is online, goalies can participate regardless of where they live or where they currently train.
An Affordable Way to Invest in Your Goalie Development
One of our goals with this partnership is to make additional coaching and mentorship resources accessible to more goaltenders and their families.
Through the TPG USA partnership, you can join the Goalie Mentors online community for just $12.47 per month.
For less than the cost of many everyday purchases, goalies can access additional coaching, mentorship, mental performance resources, and educational opportunities.
This isn't designed to replace regular on-ice training.
It's designed to complement that training and provide additional support between lessons, practices, and games.
Take Your Goaltending Development to the Next Level
Throughout my coaching career, I've always believed that successful development requires more than simply showing up to practice.
It requires a commitment to learning, a willingness to improve, and the ability to overcome challenges along the way.
That's why I'm excited about the partnership between Top Prospects Goaltending USA and Goalie Mentors (Future Pro USA).
Together, we're expanding the resources available to goalies and helping them develop the technical understanding, confidence, and mindset needed to pursue their goals.
Whether you're working toward making your next team, playing college hockey, or simply becoming the best goaltender you can be, your development is an ongoing journey.
And that journey doesn't stop when you leave the ice.
